Pathfinding EXHIBITION

A week on Thursday I'm holding my first solo show. That's right, the first real world transmission from Rotten Tropics, in the heart of the concrete jungle. There will be around 15 illustrations, some new some old, displayed alongside my moving-image works, again some new some old. I'm just finalising details at the moment.

The tentative rundown of films goes something like this:

i. In Which the Prospector Considers the Futility of Life

Hopefully there will also be something brand new.

The exhibition opens on the 18th November 6-10pm, and then runs from the 19th until the 25th. Keep an ear to Facebook for further details.

Deepest darkest Somerset

So last week I sped off to Bath for an impromptu filming session for a new project I'm working on with Oliver Lewis, tentatively titled "The Traveller".

After spending a day lurching around the rainbow woods, almost decimating my camera and my own body, and really not making very much headway at all, I decided to give up and relocate for the second day.

Day two began equally exasperating, as I trudged up Solsbury Hill with my cousin and her friend, who I had roped in to be unwitting scapegoats for my frustration in the face of an arrid desert of ideas. Be-hooded and firing off a diet of giant chocolate buttons, we commenced picking sloes and blackberries before I instructed the stars to begin trudging up and down a hill with rocks.

Strangely something magical happened and what resulted is something glacial and raw, yet somehow achieves something close to the sublime. I managed to cobble together the footage in a manic rush before it was supposed to be showing in a group exhibition the next day. The resulting edit is something I feel some sense of pride towards, despite how ramshackle it was put together, and now I'm unsure whether this is in fact merely ideas for another piece or should be considered in its own right.

A heavy rain of scratches flutters over the image, to a cacophony of pops and hisses. I let my mind float languidly in the acid rain of that indeterminate space of the screen. The decay of time has allowed that crumbling industrial world to pierce through its gelatine prison, so that I can almost feel the spray of corrosive weather on my upturned face, in the half life of my rapture.

Fits of boredom and sublimity wash over me in equal measure as time opens out, falters, and transforms before my eyes. And then there's THAT ending. It eradicates everything else before it. The clattering of the train is a long way off. The glasses slide across the table one by one. The curtains close on the white eye-lid. Then nothing, no sound, no movement. Slowly, in total silence, we clamber out of our rigor mortis and into the hollow space beyond.

Into the dark

I'm hopefully going to be working on a short film with Laura, our resident writer at Ground Floor Left, based around secret societies and murder investigations, set deep in the heart of gothic London's opium culture. Taking a lead from Dreyer's Vampyr, English gothic novels, and early seance room photography. And of course those wondrous Brothers Quay.

I'll update with more on content, and how its progressing at a later date.

None of these images belong to me, they are merely here as source of inspiration.

The sleeve for Fleet.Miscue

As usual days turned into weeks and were hastily followed by months. Or rather, a month.

Anyway, I've just completed a proper edit of footage I spoke of in my last post, tentatively titled The Botanist. I have to say, at this bleary hour at least, I am intrigued and quietly excited about the way its heading. There's no sound yet, but I'm going to begin to fill that in this week, with exciting recording plans afoot next weekend.

In other news Fleet.Miscue has had a makeover for 2010, after much painstaking work with the scalpel by myself and Mr. Lewis. I can tell you, its a lean spritely beast now, tearing in under the nine minute mark.

I have to say I am incredibly pleased with this new version, and it feels like it is finally in its correct form, ready to be given its dues in the world outside. We've already had very kind words from an individual I deeply, deeply respect and admire, which is truly encouraging in these times of doubt.

Fleet.Miscue now also has a hand made card sleeve all of its own now. I may post pictures up soon.

More news and ramblings soon, about exciting projects. Maybe even later today, when I've actually recuperated.

Braving bad weather and the illusive hooky man, my brother and I ventured deep into fen country to make an impromptu film over the weekend

O This Eternal Drift

A series of stills selected from a trilogy of films that were shown in sequence on a loop for dear friends, Chris and Andrew's Tales of the Flesh exhibition last November.

This also being the first show we put on at Ground Floor Left

As I say this was intended to be a collection of films rather than one large one. The individual titles are as follows:

i. In which the prospector considers the futility of life

ii. In which the bog oak has its prayers answered and is reborn

iii. In which the hunter stalks his prey through bog and black water

These do however all need to be further refined in order to become truly separate entities, and as such are currently referred to under the collective title of O This Eternal Drift

The vast howling void of the rotten tropics cries out to be allowed form!

I finally recalled that I had started this page, promising as I did that I would update regularly.

So much for that idyllic notion!

However, let this be the beginning...of some sort of regular update regime, starting with these images torn from the pulsing entrails of my works and laid down here free from the constrains of form and structure.
